Porsche

My take on why a Porsche is a great sportscar, SUV, Saloon, comes from the 35 + years of 911 evolution of the air cooled models. In many cases the 1964 to 1998 cars had the same DNA and parts are plentyful and interchangable, So an improvement on a later car can be retrofitted to an older model….

Porsche had great sucess in motorsport, Le Mans, Paris/Dakar endurance racing. Can AM, Targa Floria etc. Endurance racing tested the reliability of the cars to the limit,” Racing improved the breed”. In the 80’s Porsche was losing money on the 911 as it essentially was a hand built car, and the air-cooled engines could not meet the new emission and noise rules introduced the noughties.

Late 80’s and 90’s saw huge change at Porsche, Japanese production consultants were brought in to efficience the the manufacture of Porsche cars.

It started with the 986 Boxster and 996 911 sharing as many parts as possible with lean automated manufacturing and water cooled engines.

The new model’s had mixed reviews from the motoring press and enthusiasts alike. The car was powerful but built to price, and didn’t have the charm of the air cooled cars. Some of the water cooled cars developed major engine problems RMS, IMS, Bearing collapse, and bore scoring etc. The best of the breed were the Mezger engined cars in the Turbo & GT3 which was a GT1 derived engine.

A recommended read for the potential Porsche buyer is ” Porsche 911; The Practically Free Supercar ” by Robert McGowan. Even the free introduction is worth reading through and if you are hooked the book itself can be purchased from Amazon.

Oil + Filter Change

Your daily driver has to be relible, safe and good on fuel, hence the reason I stick with certain models and try to steer away from trouble. Todays cars have very long service intervals 20k miles before the first service which is normally oil and filter change.

Call me cynicial but long service intervals equals more engine wear and more major spare parts equals very high margins for the manufacturer and lots of labour required to repair same. A 10k mile Oil and Filter service should only cost circa €200 vs €1000’s for major work , its a no brainer…. Timing chains and DPF filters, ERG valves etc are non service parts and in some cases its an engine out job and associated costs to repair them…
