A few facts on the cost of car ownership.
Depreciation is the largest cost of motoring, many people don’t know this or realise this ? A €50k new car is only worth €40k after a year, and after three years €20/23k, €28k loss to depreciation. Its like a second mortgage.
PCP’s are very dangerous ? Typically when you start off, your existing car will be your deposit. Low monthly payments, equal a high balloon payment. The future value after three years, may mean there isn’t any money left to put deposit down on the next car ? Have you saved a deposit for the next car. Your options are pay the high balloon payment and car is yours, or use your savings as the deposit for the next PCP ?
Your daily driver has to be realible, safe and good on fuel, hence why I stick with certain models and try to steer away from trouble. Todays cars have very long service intervals 20k miles before the first service which is normally oil and filter change.
Regular Oil + Filter Change
Call me cynicial but long service intervals equals more engine wear and more major spare parts equals very high margins for the manufacturer and lots of labour required to repair same. A 10k mile Oil and Filter service should only cost circa €200 vs €1000’s for major work , its a no brainer…. Timing chains and DPF filters, ERG valves etc are non service parts and in some cases its an engine out job and associated costs to repair them…
What are your options ? Bike or Walk ? I think not !
Most modern quality cars, properly serviced are good for half a million miles. The sweet spot is to buy cars is at around 100k miles, because the next 100k miles is low cost motoring, depreciation is gone, servicing, and repairs are must be factored in ? Allow €2k per year. You can also get an extended warranty for less than €500 per year.
